Nepal, a cultural crossroad

A tiny country surrounded by huge India and Tibet part of China, Nepal has always been a crossroad for these cultural and religious influences, that have made their way into Nepal through trade routes and spiritual teachers retired to the mountains. However, maybe thanks to mountain life remoteness, Nepalese people also developed strong cultures of their own. This cultural trip to Nepal will make you discover them!

The Three Kingdoms

Nepal is a nation composed of hundreds of ethnic groups. The Newar developed mostly in Kathmandu valley, where three brother kings competed in three city-kingdoms: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. This race for power led to a unique display of fine arts and craftswork, that you can still witness today in these cities, their main square as well as their narrow streets and craftsmen shops.

Itinerary

On this trip to Nepal, visit the cultural basin in and around the three ancient city-kingdoms of Kathmandu, Patan and Bakhtapur, then reach the mountain countryside in Namobuddha, for spectacular views on the villages and terrace fields as well as more relaxing time in the nature.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu – Transfer to Patan

Today you’ll fly to Kathmandu. Upon arrival your driver will take you to your hotel in Patan. Rest of the day free at leisure.

Day 2: Patan – Swoyambhunath – Patan (B)

Today discover Patan with your guide: the beautiful Durban Square and pagodas of different styles, and Mahabudhha Golden Temple. Stroll through the city where many buildings date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, visit the very well restored Royal Palace and walk around the goldsmiths neighborhood. In the afternoon, you’ll reach Swoyambhunath or “Monkeys’ Temple” on top of a hill, for a great view over the city.

Day 3: Patan – Bodnath (B)

Today you will drive to Bodnath in the northeast of Kathmandu for a complete change of atmosphere. Walk around the biggest stupa in Nepal, where thousands of Buddhist pilgrims pray every year. Many Tibetan refugees who fled China live in this area. Witness the Buddhist ceremonies called puja inside Bodnath monasteries, and get enlightened with a Tibetan singing bowls session.

Day 4: Bodnath – Bakhtapur (B)

Today you will drive to Bakhtapur, another of the three city-states that used to compete for the most beautiful temples and squares in the valley. Explore its huge Durbar Square, Royal Palace with golden door and 55 windows. You’ll meander through the old city of Bakhtapur where every street corner unfolds a different public altar, and reach the famous Nyatapola Temple. Don’t forget the famous Peacock window, and admire the old Math buildings’ amazing windows and wood carvings.

Day 5: Bakhtapur – Namobuddha (B, L, D)

Today you will drive to Namobuddha, located on the crests of mid-altitude mountains (1800-2000m). Breathe in the purer air of the countryside, and enjoy the views on the villages and terraced fields while walking to Namobuddha monastery. This big and magnificently decorated monastery is a sharp contrast with the local villages and humble houses, where the damages of 2015 earthquake can still be seen. Stay at a peaceful eco-resort where fresh vegetarian meals are included.

Day 6: Namobuddha – Panauti – Kathmandu (B, L)

This morning, get started for a 4-5h trek through the hills and pine forests, to Roshi river and Khopasi village. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the way. Then you’ll visit Panauti: this small town used to be a halt for the caravans of merchants on the way to Tibet. Finally you will drive to Kathmandu.

Day 7: Kathmandu (B)

Free day at leisure to discover Kathmandu at your own pace.

Day 8: Kathmandu Departure (B)

Today is the end of your trip to Nepal. Your driver will take you to the airport, where you’ll take your flight to your next destination.
