A tiny drop of land in the ocean at the south of India, Sri Lanka will fulfill your travel wishes in every term: the culture, nature, people, food, weather will make you feel in an enchanted paradise where everything looks full of interest.
You can head south for a well-deserved resting time on the white beaches of the Indian ocean: Galle, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa, Tangalle will each offer you their distinctive particularities according to your preferences. To the east, the shores of Trincomalee are also known for their amazing beauty and long white sand beaches.
Apart from this farniente time in paradise, don’t forget to discover the island’s culture and history. Hidden in the jungle, Polonnaruwa used to be the kingdom’s capital city from the 10 th to 13 th century. Now these old stones are covered with trees and bushes, and you can explore these mystic ruins by foot or by bicycle. In Anuradhapura, the previous capital city from the 4 th to 10 th century, you can still discover the most sacred temple of the island. Kandy, Sri Lanka’s last royal capital city, will show you its lively agitation, as well as its Tooth Temple, extremely famous for keeping a tooth relic of Buddha himself. The Buddhist faith of the island is also clearly visible at the Dambulla grottoes, where you can admire the oldest statue of Buddha in the country. But if you’d rather discover a different aspect of Sri Lanka, go for its hindu part on Jaffna peninsula. There everything just changes.
If you’re a tea lover (and even if you’re not), don’t miss the island’s tea plantations. Growing on Sri Lanka’s higher lands, this tea benefits from a higher altitude’s climate. The mountains, jungle and waterfalls surround the plantations, making them a beautiful spot for a nice walk. If you prefer animals to leaves, you can rather explore Wilpattu or Yala national park. The second one is home to the highest density of leopards in the world! Where else can you get that?
