A trip to Fujian to the Hakka houses
These houses are located in Fujian province, in the inner countryside a few hours away from the coastal city of Xiamen. Made of clay, they were originally square but became round-shaped in order to avoid bad spirits hiding in the corners. These oval fortresses were also more difficult to attack from the outside. Discover this unique architecture in China in a beautiful area.
Historical legacy
46 of those donut-shaped houses are now classified at the UNESCO heritage.
Itinerary
On this trip to Fujian you'll visit Xiamen, a laid-back port city, and explore the small Gulangyu island before leaving to the countryside to discover the Tulou region.
Itinerary
Upon your arrival in Xiamen, transfer to the city center and check in at your hotel. You’ll start your visit of Xiamen on Gulangyu island, that you will reach by a short 5mn ferry trip. You will find there some colonial architectural vestiges of the past, as it became a foreign enclave from the 1840s (after the British victory of the 1st Opium war) until the 1930s. Gulangyu is a charming and luxuriant island with narrow tortuous alleys where it is pleasant to walk as cars are forbidden.
You’ll depart to the Tulou area located 2.5hrs from Xiamen, famous for its ancient Hakka people houses. Start your discovery with Gaobei and Chengqilou Tulou, the biggest Tulou dating back to more than 300 years ago and composed of four concentric circular buildings. Enjoy a walk in the surrounding mountains to get a panoramic view on the area. You will also visit Jiqinglou, Shengqilou and Yuqinglou, other typical Hakka houses that each have their particularities.
On the last day of this tour to Fujian you’ll go for a walk on Guangzhai Mount to admire the great view on the villages and hills around. After lunch you’ll visit the ancient village of Peitian, also known as the Forbidden City of the south. Finally your driver will take you back to Xiamen.
