A kora at Mount Amnye Machen
Tibetan culture spreads over most of the western part of China, even outside of the administrative region of Tibet. The Amnye Machen, a range of mountains which peaks at 6282m with mount Amnye Machen, is sacred for Tibetan people. They reach this mountain for a 3-day pilgrimage. This circular walk around the mountain is called a kora. You too, come and join this sacred pilgrimage, at the heart of sublime valleys and surrounded with magnificent icy peaks.
Amdo
The Amdo region is one of the three ancient Tibetan regions, which nowadays mostly covers Qinghai province. Its people are traditionnally Tibetan Golok. According to this people's legends, the magic sword of the Tibetan hero Gesar of Ling is hidden inside the Amnye Machen mountain.
Itinerary
You'll meet your fellow travelers in Xining and reach together by car the mount Amnye Machen, with a stop at Ragya monastery. You'll go on with three days of trek, three magical days to disconnect in the mountains pure atmosphere, at an altitude varying between 3000 and 4300m high.
Itinerary
Upon your arrival at Xining airport you’ll meet your driver, your guide and fellow travelers and drive to Machen county (~7hrs drive). Enjoy the beautiful views along the way. On the way you’ll visit Ragya monastery, Qinghai province’s second biggest Buddhist monastery. It is still home to 500 monks. You’ll have a look at the Yellow River banks below. In Machen county, you’ll settle for your first night camping.
After breakfast, you’ll start your trek towards the Amnye Machen Base Camp (~12km, 6-7hrs walk). You’ll pass by two beautiful lakes that the local nomads call the Golden Lake and Silver Lake. Then you’ll keep walking along the valley with magnificent views upon the Amnye Machen higher peaks, and the glaciers surrounding it. Tonight, you’ll settle your tents next to a nomad winter camp location.
Today you’ll keep trekking, enjoying the views upon the beautiful snowy peaks surrounding you. Your steps will take you to Halong Valley (12km, 6-7hrs walk). You’ll settle your tents on a grassland near a Tibetan nomad family camp. Take the chance to go and visit the family and learn more about their high altitude lifestyle.
This morning, you’ll start your last day of trek (14km, ~7hrs walk). You’ll cross the river, pass by a few nomad families camps and ascend up to the Yi pass, over 4300m high. You’ll walk down on the other side, in Yilong valley where some other nomad families also live. You can also pay them a visit and install your tents close to a nomad winter camp location.
Today, you’ll meet your driver who will take you to Golok airport, where you’ll take your flight to Xining. In Xining you’ll take your flight back home.
