Badain Jaran desert
Badain Jaran desert
The Badain Jaran 巴丹吉林沙漠 desert is located in northern China in Inner Mongolia at the border of Gansu and Ningxia provinces. The desert covers an area of 49,000 square kilometers. This desert is known for its mega-dunes and its many salt lakes (there are more than a hundred lakes). The entry in the desert is by jeep with our professional drivers. You will also find the 3rd (or 4th depending on the rankings) highest dune in the world, the Bilutu peak, at 1611,009m with a drop of 500m. The last meters to climb are the most difficult because the sand is more compact there, but it is worth the effort for the sublime view as a reward. Remember to take a sled with you for an absolutely thrilling descent!
The temple
At the heart of the desert you will find a temple built in 1755, which thanks to its location in the middle of the desert far from everything, was not destroyed during the cultural revolution.
The good season to travel
If the cold does not scare you then December and January are ideal months to explore this place. In addition to not bumping any tourists there, you will have the chance to see the snow-covered dunes (on the other hand as soon as the sun goes down it you will need to be well wrapped up because the temperatures drop to -20/-30 degrees. You can enjoy the heat of your camels because in this season their coat is very thick and soft. The months of April and September/October are pleasant in temperature, neither too hot nor too cold.
