Itinerary

Fly to Kangding, ancient gateway to Tibet in the west of Sichuan and meet your fellow travelers and reach Tagong by car. You will spend one day there to get acclimatized to the high altitude then start a 4-day trek around Yala Mountain. Enjoy the pure air of the mountains then go back to Tagong and Chengdu.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tagong (D)

This morning, take your flight to Kangding. Pick up at the airport and meet your guide. You will leave by car for Tagong grasslands with your fellow travelers. On the way, you will go through Zheduo pass (4200m).
You will spend the night in Tagong, also called Lhagang in Tibetan, to acclimatize to the altitude.

Day 2: Tagong (B,L,D)

Start your day with the exploration of Tagong. You will visit Tagong monastery and relax in the afternoon so that you can keep acclimatizing to the altitude and prepare for your trek departure on the next day.

Day 3: Tagong - Manijiago - Trek day 1 (altitude max 4300m) (B,L,D)

This morning you will leave Tagong by car for a short ride to reach Manijiago where your yaks and horses will be prepared for the trek. Today your trek is not too hard: you’ll pass yak herds, see some vultures then you’ll slowly leave the sounds of the city to enjoy total nature.
Tonight you will camp and sleep near a river around 4200m high.

Day 4: Trek day 2 to Zhakra Camp (altitude max 4800m) (B,L,D)

This morning, after a good breakfast, you will leave for your second day of hike. You will walk about 2hrs before reaching the highest pass of your stay at 4800m high. Your yaks and horses caravan will also go through the pass: seeing the agility of these animals is quite impressive.
After a good 5-hour walk you will settle your camp at Zhakra for the night. You’ll be near a nomad camp and you’ll be able to enjoy a bath in natural hotsprings.

Day 5: Trek day 3 (altitude max 4000m) (B,L,D)

Today is a pretty easy day. You’ll start your walk down the valley and along the river. Then you’ll go up through the forest and walk through a pass at 4000m. Your camping site won’t be far after the pass.

Day 6: Trek day 4 to Manijiago (altitude max 4500m) (B,L,D)

Day 7: Lhagang - Chengdu (B,L)

Today it’s time to say goodbye to the nature, Tibetan plateau and hit the road back to Chengdu (6-7hrs drive). Enjoy a good shower and a comfortable bed at your hotel in Chengdu.

“The Yala’s trek requires an enormous amount of energy. But the views are superb. Every day, we saw mountains with diverse types of greenery. The organization of the trek is just perfect: talented guides, frequent water and food breaks, yaks and horses to carry your stuff. I really liked it!.”

“I've be hiking the Yala Trek with Emilie and her team and it has been a great experience! definetely sometimes it requires some resilience specially when you go up in altitude and the air gets rare ...but when u touch 4800 mt all the fatigue disappears and you enter a state of grace! a real extra bonus which i really didn't expect is the good food... really nice and variate both at the base camp village and the one made by our local guides during the trek. Definitely an experience which i would recommend to everyone who loves nature and adventure!”

“The 8-day trip to the city of Tagong in China’s Sichuan province and hiking the nearby 5000 metre high Yala mountain was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Tibetan plateau with its endless landscapes and tranquility was the perfect escape from the bustling big city life. On our way we met nomad tribes, passed Tibetan temples, saw deer herds, crossed riverbeds, withstood rain and snow storms, rested with Yaks, soaked our feet in natural hot springs and slept in high altitude. Could there be a greater challenge and adventure to take on than that?!”

“I joined the Yala Mount trekking on May 2021, I was a solo traveler and I really enjoyed the experience of meeting new people while sharing such an amazing trip.
I wish to thank Emilie and Travel Stone for the great arrangement they made before the departure, we got all the info we needed in advance about clothes, equipment and any further question we had was immediately addressed so we could made our own preparations for the trip.
I got all the support I needed while booking flights/trains to the meeting point (we traveled during pandemic so there was lot of uncertainty in booking inland transfers) and everything went smooth!
The multiple days trek was just amazing, the weather was not the best since was still quite cold despite was early May (we found snow as well!), but we were ready to that.

Kunchok was our guide for the entire trip, just a great man and very skilled hiker always ready to help and motivate us during the hike. How not to mention Kunchok culinary expertise? He together with the horsemen cooked for us for all the trek, from breakfast to dinner… meat, veggies, pasta, soups and many other simple but tasty foods.
Local horsemen that took us around and helped with luggage, tents, food were super friendly despite language barriers, they even invited us to their home for a tea to warm up on the last day.
The village of Tagong is also very nice to visit after/before the trek, many Tibetan monks around and the atmosphere is very authentic.
If you are looking for a very enjoyable experience in China, out of the beaten path, authentic, with a skilled organization but still a very easygoing and friendly atmosphere, I totally recommend Travel Stone’s trips! Hope can join them again in the future!”
